I am excited as a barn cat at milking time for all of you who have chosen to do this project. I myself have learned a lot while exploring my own family's American story, which begins in the early 17th Century! These kinds of discoveries teach you a lot about history, and they also teach you a lot about yourself. If we know where we come from, we know better who we are and where we are going.
I will post on this page various resources that you can use in completing your project. And, if you decide to do video interviews or have photographs, documents, etc. to post, I would be happy to post them here, as long as your family have given permission for you to do so. I will have an Ohio Historical Society release for you to sign, when the time comes. Until then, watch for additions to the page. and, as always, I will give extra credit for any site recommendations that I end up placing here. Happy hunting!
Here is the link to the requirements for completing your family tree project. You must submit your final draft by Friday, May 8. I recommend that you turn it in earlier, in case something needs to be fixed.
This About.com article on how to search your family roots offers a step-by-step lesson that will help you complete your project.
Family Search is an outstanding service offered by the Latter Day Saints. It is free, and at the site you can locate and print birth certificates, death certificates, and other useful records. It takes a little practice to use it well, but it is wonderul.
My Heritage is a great genealogy research site that offers a FREE family tree program. You won't be able to access records, but otherwise it is great; in fact, it is in many ways better than Ancestry.com, which tends to get complicated.
